So it was late on a Sunday evening, working at the ITP lab as usual. It was the last night of the New York Blipfestival (a four day festival of video-game inspired music & video), which I was likely to miss. At this point, Rui said something like “Why the **** are we in New […]
Another fascinating speaker turns up at ITP! Dustyn Roberts, an engineer from Honeybee Robotics, came to talk about her work. Her most high-profile work so far has been to build the Rock Abrasion Tool for the Mars Rovers, still operating on the red planet.
She discussed her current project, a self-contained core drilling robot called […]
I went to see this show with a bunch of other ITP students. Matmos is a very interesting duo (with occasional collaborators) that works with found sound and samples, using it produce music with a pointed political sentiment. So Percussion started out as an avantgarde percussion quartet, mostly playing the works of other composers, but […]
I went to see the premiere of “8 Bit” at the MoMA. It’s a movie about videogame art, starting from the early days of computing and arcade games. I was particularly pleased to see artists such as Bodenstandig 2000, Bubblyfish and Glomag in the film, especially since I’d seen some of them perform recently!
Cory […]
I went to see the Wired Nextfest in New York, a tradeshow/exhibition focused around technology and the future.
Frankly, I found it a bit disturbing. The vision of the future presented is very much technology for its own sake, dominated by large corporations, and with a strong militaristic streak. There is no real attempt to […]
Went to see another Darmstadt event at the Spiegeltent. This time the emphasis was more on “found footage” than live performance, though there were a couple of exceptions.
A highlight for me was the AV Geeks presentation of some very odd psychedelic films for schoolchildren, produced by Encyclopedia Britannica, and… the US Government.
The following […]
Went to see a Unity Gain performance at the Spiegeltent, the elaborate temporary structure now living at the South Street Seaport. Unity Gain is a sort of electronic jam session of audio & video artists, mostly using computers. Great layout of the space – big vertical screen on top of a round table, all the […]
Went the SoHo Art Parade, organized by Deitch Projects. Interesting subversion of a traditional form (the “parade”) to present some amusing, satirical and quite snarky art.
Coffee with painkillers attached.
I went to see TheUpgrade at the Eyebeam gallery in Chelsea, featuring a presentation of three pieces developed at ITP on the subject of surveillance. Interesting emphasis in the discussion, away from the well-trodden areas of politics, privacy, security, etc. and instead exploring the joy experienced by those doing the surveilling.
The three pieces were […]
