Shooting immersive video in the field (or – Ladybug's New Orleans Adventure)

I am working on an art project involving panoramic video, shot in New Orleans. The project is a commission for video artist Pawel Wojtasik from the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA). It will form part of a show called “These Days: Elegies for Modern Times”, opening on April 4th.

Since I have […]

Wall•E loves Noise Toys

The audio responsive iDance Wall•E toy very much likes Noise Toys from Loud Objects:

Deadly Sugar addiction harming OLPC XO laptop

I’ve had the OLPC XO laptop now for several months, and feel I understand it well enough to comment further on it. I’ve spent a lot of time working with it, and feel that it is working as well as an OLPC XO is ever going to work. I’m using a development build of the […]

OLPC runs Processing and Arduino

At NYU’s ITP program, the Processing and Arduino programming environments are widely used. Since my main interest in the OLPC is to use it as a controller for projects, and since most of my projects are built using those two tools, I was very interested in getting them running on the OLPC.

In addition, both […]

Making the OLPC XO useful

I’ve moved the information in this post to a dedicated page here.

Bug Labs launch party

I went to a party for Bug Labs, a New York based startup that is launching a modular portable hardware development platform. The core of the system is a very compact, powerful, Linux-based computer. It’s housed in a slick plastic case with four modular connectors that let you easily add modules. Right now these include […]

OLPC arrived!

I recently participated in the One Laptop Per Child program that donates one laptop to the developing world for each one that you buy. Well, the little computers arrived today, ahead of schedule:

First impressions:

Very good hardware design Not very fast, but usable Software has some issues

I will write more as I learn […]

I can't believe it's an iPod!

Well, actually, it isn’t. Found it in Sim Lim Tower (Singapore), marketed as Nano Gen II. It has a bigger screen, built-in speaker, FM radio… and a diabolically useless user interface, all for S$55. (The real iPod is on the left…)

Future of video cameras, today

I was in Sakuraya (a large Japanese electronics retailer) today, and saw something interesting: Of the 20 models of video camcorder that they had on sale, only 3 used DV tape. One of these was a Sony HC-7 (HDV) and the other two were from Panasonic and Canon. Every other camcorder there recorded to DVD-R […]

Physical Computing final project finished!

I have finished my final project for the Physical Computing class!

To recap, it is a cluster of four lamps made with multicolor LEDs, each containing a bunch of sensors, a microcontroller and a Zigbee (802.14) radio. Gestures in front of any of the lamps are transmitted to all the lamps, and this changes the […]
