NY Cabs

Bright yellow cabs are a noticeable feature of New York’s urban landscape – but what if they were a different color?

Everything was done in Vegas Video. With a bit more time, would do it in After Effects and put more effort into the masking.

The Last Train

Shibuya Station in Tokyo, approaching midnight. A mass of people racing to catch the last train, and after they enter the station, a wave of people leaving the station to spend the night clubbing, partying or otherwise making the most of the darkness.

Applied a simple effect to highlight the unreality of the situation.

Music generated by Cinescore…

Sakura Yukata

Simple animation made from yukata textile patterns.

While cherry blossoms tend to be an image associated with the spring, yukatas are worn mostly in the summer.

The music is a recording of street musicians at the Sanja matsuri, also in the summer.

I worked on trying to make the animation match the music, and have the transitions be relatively clean.

NY Street Numbers

Another one minute video is taking a long time to finish, so I’ve decided to update and re-post this project to avoid falling behind.

I took pictures of the numbered street signs from 1st to 60th Street (and beyond…), and made a little montage. I originally prepared this project last year, but have now re-rendered it in high definition.

I made the beat track myself using Ableton Live.

Interestingly, compressing a high definition file using the H.264 codec results in a file half the size of standard definition, using Motion JPEG…

Moving without travelling

No matter what route you follow, the destination looks the same…

Moving without travelling

No matter how you get there, the destination is always pretty much the same…

Footage from the Yurikamome monorail line in Tokyo, ambient sound. The driverless trains are very tightly synchronized, even the announcements take place at the same time.

New York Colors

Abstract video based on footage of New York’s midtown, taken from a car with a sunroof!

I took special care with masking out the beginning and end of sequences, though my editing program seems to have left some hairline artifacts.

Best cinematic moments are when the car turns – also the mirroring effect is visually satisfying.

Music is automatically generated by Cinescore.

Welcome to Istanbul

The second in my One Minute Per Day series.

It’s based on footage I shot for another project, all in Istanbul.

I was trying to get a sense of rhythm going, and put together part of score using traffic noises from Istanbul.

There is room for improvement – it’s not quite sync’ed with the beat of the music, and some of the clips are a bit jarring, they don’t have the same motion as the others.

One Minute per Day

As a way of keeping my video skills sharp, I’ve decided to edit and put online a one minute long video every day. (Much like what Bre Pettis is doing, but with a different kind of video.) I figure that after two months, I’ll have one hour of material! I’m putting them on my One […]

A walk through a Tokyo alley

First installment in my one minute video per day project. I’ll be uploading one minute videos every day for the foreseeable future.

This first video is a walk through an alley in Tokyo (Shibuya-ku). The video is heavily cut to keep it interesting, but I’ve maintained continuity by keeping the sound un-cut.

The color treatment is meant to complement the film-noirish setting, and focus attention on some of the striking graphic elements in the scene.
